"I scanned the restaurant, killing time.
Two couples, occupying some of the other ten tables, were already eating,
sitting opposite the little dinning room from me. As I tried to keep my area from getting too wet from my dripping rain gear, I
replayed the visual possibilities I’d just encountered while walking through
town. Four twisted, house lined lanes nestled atop an overlook of southern
Montalcino; fall colored vineyards and silver colored olive-tree groves
rested in solitude below.
It is as spectacular a view now as when roman
soldiers peered out from there two thousand years ago. I re-focused my attention on my
surroundings. The scene to my right looked just like a painted still life.
I realized the possibilities and quickly set up my camera and tripod.
Proper lens choice, light meter readings, final composition check and then
the exposure made. All just in time, as the proprietor burst from the
kitchen with my arugula salad, grabbed the oil and vinegar from ‘my scene’,
and placed them all on my table. “Bon Appitito” she said and was gone."
