Michael was born with a camera in one hand, a brush in the other,
and a fishin' po' in his mouth!!!

Started off with lake employee Bill checking us for our Reservations.

This is my first year fishing Barrett Lake here in Southern California, San Diego county.
My wife's and my first time out netted us 7 fish on April 18th.  I got six and
she got one although we only fished until 1:30 p.m..  Mostly on Senkos, but one on a jig, my first ever.

Here is one caught on a Senko trying his best to throw the bait.

Here he is posing after a long fight.

Second trip out, three days later, Rob Q and I did quite well.
Here are some pictures of Barrett Lake that day.

I netted 15, shy of my 30 fish limit.  6 on poppers, 8 on senkos and 2 on jigs.

Results of my first four trips out, all within a three week period, will soon be posted.

First trip there ever:  4.18.'04:  6 bass, Valerie 2.

Second trip 4.21.'04: 14 bass, friend Rob 8.

Third trip 5.2.'04:  18 bass, all on my lonesome.

Fourth trip 5.9.'04 with new acquaintance Barry: Goal- 30 bass.  Results: hey, not bad, landed 29 beauties.  T.U.L. (Thank U Lord.)

Fifth trip 6.30.'04:  Back down to 6 bass, Valerie 2 and one big crappie.  Lake conditions changed dramatically while I was away working in China for 5 weeks.  Very hot and weed line grew vertically and horizontally.  All patterns that worked previously left me cold.  Had to figure out complete new system.

Sixth trip was with Herbert Kellner on 7.17.04:  6 for me again (one was a crappie, hit a rattletrap) and 4 for him.  Many lost at boats edge. Hotter yet.

(These all run an average of 17" and about 2.5 to 3 lbs, and are a northern strain of bass, very hard fighters.)

Guess how much this monster bass weighed?

That's right, at least 6.  Unless there is not

much of a body underneath, right?

All head, body undersized.

Herbert landed the first four freshwater bass of his lifetime this hot July
Saturday, under my tutelage.  He caught them on senko worms and rattletrap crank baits.
We lost more than we landed as the barb-less system
that is required really give these hard fighting fish a good advantage.  Of course, being
a catch and release only lake means it really doesn't matter in the end.

My first 'frog fish'. 9.15.'04

After a two month hiatus we went out to Barrett again, this time it was
way cooler, but just after a very hot and humid week.  Lake is
very green from an algae bloom, but fishing was better.  I really concentrated on fishing the frog.  Landed four on it, and three frogs too.

Yep, the frogs loved my frog.  I could have caught dozens of
bullfrogs, and they do fight, but I used them to mostly
cause more bass attracting action keeping mine just far
enough in front of them to keep them interested, but far enough
back that they could not grab it.  Was a thin line of workmanship, sometimes
the frog won.  Kinda like a the greyhound races buy the dog catches the rabbit.

Herd's first was on a sinking fluke lure, tossed in the shadowed sides of
a large 'weed island', set out from another shore hugging weed bed.

My second of four 'frog fish'.  I got the hang of this style of
fishing by the end of the day. I did revert to top water fluke fishing the last half hour and slay four more with one on a senko as a follow up to a miss.  Ended up with 10 for the day, Herbert got four again with many misses.  I farmed at least 10 myself, or I would have ended up with 20 for the day.
