Last trip of the year...
Wed., Dec. 20th,
Otay Lake

Boat:  Tom C's
Me , Tom

We fished back end of Harvey's again. Did ok, but not super.  Ended the day back at dam buoy line, and worked back to Bushlowe cove, one on jb for me, surprised we didn't do better. Broke small jb Tom had loaned me the week before.

Wed., Dec. 13th,
Otay Lake

Boat:  Tom C's
Me 20, Tom 15
water started out at 59 and got up to 64 1/2 By 3pm

We got out and started fishing about 8:30. We didn't really start doing well till 10, with my front seater getting some nice ones. After I realized an adjustment needed... downsized Rapala jerkbait again, thanks to info from 'Pwy_FireCapt' (screen name fisherman on SDFish who was killing them) over the pattern from my last trip two weeks ago, things started to click.

Ended with only getting four limits and my front seater three. Pretty day out though, and time on the water is precious.

Wed., Nov. 29th,
Otay Lake

Boat:  Answered Prayer 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
W/ David V.
Me 70, David 30

Maybe so, as my backseater got 10 times more than He did last week with me, congrats DiegoFish. I did OK, I got 13 more than I did last week, meaning a new personal best again, but I had an extra hour and a half to Fish too. This time they were slightly larger overall (really only averaging about 10 inches) and some bigger models thrown in. Lots of double hookups, felt like Barrett again. Fun times, TUL.

Wed., Nov. 22nd,
Otay Lake

Boat:  Answered Prayer 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
W/ David V. Me 57, David 3

Met David at the ramp at 6 a.m., supposed to reach mid 90's, wow. East wind of about 10 mph greeted us.
Saw Jim (JJbasser) and he said his lack of reports last couple of months was due to back injury. We ran
to the back left cove 1/2 back in Harvey's, and worked the outside tulles just past the cove with frogs and largest
Whopper Plopper for nada, David tossed the kick leg frog. Worked our way into the cove, and then to the back of it, nada. Ran to end of Harvey's and kept with same topwater baits into the shallows, going in the middle section instead of far left, more nada.

Worked our way back out and then I switched to the Rapala suspending hardbait/jerkbait and started getting them. Kept working the outside area of the floating vegetation and kept getting them, some about a pound, most 1/2 or 3/4 8 to 10" dinks, but was a lot of fun. I kept getting more and more, two limits, then three, then four, or my. Kept at it. Worked all across the end flats (6 to 8') and even got my first double. David did not have the type lure, loaned him one of mine, but bigger, after he tried a fluke and underspin for nada. He finally got one on a green chatterbait, then a couple of more on d/s. By 1 was looking at 8 limits, then 9, 10 and even 11 by 2 p.m.. Had to call it a day at that point, or could have ended with 100 bass! Wow T.U.L.

Thur., Nov. 16th,
San Vicente

Boat:  Paul Owen's
7 a.m. till 2 p.m. / Paul 4, me 3

Paul at the bottom lot and drove up and loaded up in his boat. Paid fees (his birthday celeb.) and ran to the left of the island, cove on left. Nada fishing WP me and various him. After working our way west 1/2 down the shore (headed towards the ramp) and Paul getting one on d/s, we made a run to the back of Kimball's. Nada on the right side, starting from the point, w/ d/s for both of us working towards the back, nada. Then ran across to the other side, and then to the back of the long cove, with the giant granite boulder on the right. Lots of small bass hitting silverside shad.

Paul got another on the d/s, and I got one on the smaller Rapala suspending ghost jerkbait, the one that worked their the week before. We then ran to the back of Toll Rd. arm and we worked from the far back back out past two coves, back to the point with a flat, where the bass were busting shore too, but bigger than the ones back in Kimball's, catchable, but we had to leave, Paul had to go see a movie later. I lost a nice one and landed two on the jerkbait, wish we could have stayed, my numbers would have risen dramatically.

Sun., Nov. 12th,
Otay Lake

Boat:  Answered Prayer 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Slept at lake that night, to bed around 1 p.m., up at 5 and on water by 5:45. Sunrise was spectacular and got some great shots with the iPhone. Ran to the back right back of Harvey's, heard from buddy Frank M. that he'd got 6 on the frog the Wed., before (was going to go Sat. with David, but guy that stored my boat had the gate locked in a way I could not get it at 10:30 on Friday night, so had to cancel).

Got a blow up on the frog, and worked my way into the back shallows, where I got another blow up after an hour or so. By 10 a.m. I'd worked it over pretty well, getting two more blow ups, nothing stuck. Ran back to the van around 2 and took an 1 hour nap, giving me more energy to finish the day. Worked the cove on the left, 1/2 way back down Harvey's, looked great, with WP and frogs, nada. Worked the outside tulles headed back to the entrance and just about got to the point when the worker came around getting everyone to leave. Another great sunset too, got more shots. T.U.L.

Thur., Nov. 2nd,
San Vicente

Boat:  Answered Prayer
11:30 a.m. till 6 p.m. / David V. 0, me 9

11: 30 to 6. Started back in Kimball's, looking for buster action I'd heard about, nada. Worked it from right side, just past the point back to the trees in back, topwater, nada. Looked great too. Then to the Island, stated on one end and worked to other end, all Whopper Plopper, nada.

Decided to run to the back of Toll Rd. and finally went to a suspending jerkbait, silver, about 3.5' long, and got followers but no takers. Switched to a smaller, Rapala Shad Rap 3 1/8", 1/4 oz. 'Ghost minnow' suspending jerkbait and started hooking up. Dinks mostly, but a couple of nice 1 to 1 1/4 pound bass thrown in. Ended with 9 in that last hour, cool. David got into the busters that showed up last 15 minutes on a kick leg frog, but fogot to set the hook. I got a nice one on the suspending bait, but was tough because they were right on shore in the bushes and hard to reach. Got escorted out at about 6 p.m., nice day on the water. T.U.L.

Mon., Oct. 23rd thru Thurs., the 26th
California Delta

Boat:  Answered Prayer
Day 1, Oct. 23rd

Taught a photo workshop in Yosemite, and stored the boat in Oakhurst at the motel until Sunday night, when I picked it up around 5 or so.

Delta Monday October 23rd starting at 7:30 in the morning after sleeping seven hours at flying J truck stop in Lodi. I had a Subway sandwich without the bread breakfast A. Ate 2/3 around 10:30 AM the balance at dinner Tk

It's 3:25 now, been slow. When I got out I thought it was high tide but was low. tractor cove, tractor was showing. Very clear water, from lack of rain to strain it id guess. a lot of rain kept that water higher too, tractor would've been covered in high tide later but wasn't. There was no movement for like three hours, and very little movement right now. I've got incoming. I'm trying a spinner bait Mike Meyers suggested. I got three bass on the white spinner bait with the bass pro shop speed shad trailer 4 inch white trailer. half ounce KVD. got some on the gun fish but Small and I got a bunch on the jerk bait but small 5 inch or 6 inches and I got Two stripers one first cast on spinner bait after not using it for a couple hours. Threw the suspending jerk bait around 1030 and started getting lots of smaller fish up to 10 inches. I've been working the bank mostly, zero wind almost all day. temperature they said was 88 feels like it.

Evening update. Got another striper, a good 3 pounds, by the 'house tule islands. Two nice spinner bait bass along tule point Down in the grasses.

Ran back to the dock and got a beer and Chugged two cold waters before hand. Ran back to tractor bay to check tide and it was slightly higher than it was at low tide but not much. Faster for Nada, back out to the point, and then finished east in the shadows and got one on BPS kick tail shad. Fished till dark, around 7 o'clock, and left the boat and trailer hooked to the electrical at Tower Park. Got the parking permit earlier, so it's cool to park there through Thursday. 1130 pm now and hanging at flying J truckstop again.

Day 2, Oct. 24th

Slept in the van again to bed about midnight up at 8:30. slept OK for the van, headed towards Lodi for my breakfast at Golden ox diner but instead found a breakfast place from Michael and David Z Vineyards. steak and eggs and more eggs in exchange for the hash browns,+ fruit for $11.95. and I met Ashley over at the wine bar afterwords, had a quick and small sip of One of their Zens– Ashley said the managers a fisherman he might want to join me so I gave her a couple cards and told her to give one of the owners maybe do a trade out.

got on the water at 10:30 ran to the the last island on sycamore slough got one on the third cast on the bass pro shop Shad surface. and a three in a cast later in three more islands nothing went to the spinner bait again and third cast got a nice three-quarter pound, it's 1:40 now.

John Olichney joined me after calling in at three and saying he was on his way. Picked me up some KFC chicken and showed up around four. we ran back to Sycamore and started on the first batch of tall is this time. He threw a gun fish and a small jerk bait, suspending, and that got him seven total for the day. He got to stripers in the beginning on the gun fish and I got an 19" on the hole-in-one lure, 1 inch over minimum size. I kept it for him. I missed one on the frog, a nice one, and then a little further down got a nice 3.5 on the frog. He was slowly getting them on the jerk bait, and about dark we made a run back to the bridge area. We worked the point westward, Towards B&W, and about a half hour later, 7:30 and dark out, I got a 8 1/3 on the White whopper popper. John did a great job with the net, although we almost lost it at first when he missed.

Now we're talking, an 8 1/3 lb lunker on topwater, TUL.

I got a room at the Motel 6 in Lodi and was asleep by 11 PM, dead tired from tonight's in the van and fishing so long each day. Good nights rest, then breakfast at the Golden ox, Then picked up the boat and took it to Paradise marina to launch.

Day 3, Wed., Oct. 25th
Mike Myers said he was ready to pick me up if I wanted to join him so I decided to go with him, And this was about 930 or so after running back to get gas at loves truck stop. Like the last two days, it was sunny and no wind, but Mike said he already had five since oh dark hundred on S waiver and white spinner baits, two pounders. We made a run toward Franks tract, right side of Mandeville island, and I got a couple on the white spinner bait after an hour or so. He slowly got them on them too.

After an hour so I ran to potato slow, and tried hard Luxembourg slowly getting one or two here or there. We decided to run to the bridge by tower park marina to find moving water, but stopped between Tower Park and three island honey hole, where I got some on day one on grasses on single house tule Island, which looks Abandoned now. I got one on the hole-in-one by the house dock, and then another little further down, both about 1 1/2 pounds. The wind was starting to finally come up in the last hour. We worked from the bridge west towards BMW for about a mile and I got one more on top, Mike zero. We ran back and finished a spot of Kings Island, for Nada, then ran past paradise towards Stockton. I finally tied on a cream super spook and got hit first cast, then got one about a half hour later. We finished around 7 o'clock, almost completely dark out. It was a good day for us fellowship wise, and fishing was So So.

Chatted at the launch ramp while he cleaned his boat and then I went to Lodi for in and out burger. Refilled my water bottles which I'm keeping now, got some ice, a double double protein style, and have spent the last hour updating these reports and checking emails. Plan an early start tomorrow out of paradise, and hope to get some good frogfish.

Day 4, Thurs., Oct. 26th

Fished out of Paradise marina after staying at Flying J truck stop in the van. To bed early and up early, 7 am, and got to ramp and launched and fishing by 8. Forgot to pay launch fee, paid when I left. Worked the island by the bridge after heading north (right) from the ramp through the no wake zone for nada, spook and w Plopper 130 and the Savage rat. Ran to Mike's honey hole other side of King Island for nada with rat, then worked towards King Marina, which is further out 8 mile road, and did not get one till about 11 when the wind kicked up, on the 130 Plopper over a tulle island point, a 2 but a fish none the less. The wind was non-existent again, made the bite tough. Threw the blade, but mostly the rat. Continued that slough and did not get on them until dusk, when I came across a big flat off one of the islands that had grasses up to 5' in 8' water, running the blade over them. Got five in about an hour, averaging 2 pounds each, fun times. At dusk ran back to small island near Paradise and worked the 130 Plopper all the way back, nearly, to the ramp, getting a 2# on it about 1/4th the way into the long run, about 7 p.m. and nearly completely dark. Got off the water an hour later, at 8. Ran to the Flying J in Santa Nella and charged up the batteries while crashing in the van, till 7 a.m., where I left it for three days and picked it up on the return that Sunday evening.

Got blessed with two gents at the truck stop tire center there, not busy and helped me get not just one tailight going, but the second which had not worked in years, TUL.

Wed., Oct. 18th
Otay, solo

Boat:  Answered Prayer 1 pm to 6:30 pm
3, two popper frog, one propbait

Back in the country, got my notch on my belt for a bass caught in another country, France, and back where the bass grow big and eat mean, OTAY- YEAH.

Got there to blue skies and slight breeze, a perfect day. A young man named Jeff came up and introduced himself, had got a couple of dinks he reported. I hoped to do better as I figure with this warm weather the frog bite should be as good as it was before I left three weeks ago. And it was...

Click photo to enlarge.
First one was on the popper frog.

Ran to the back of Harvey's and found my buddy Tom on them since daybreak, he'd come a long way on learning the frog bite since we went out together a couple of months ago, and got a faster reel and is now getting hooksets not just blowups, cool. Reported 10 on the frog last week, a few less this, but getting them on some other baits I'd showed him quite well now.

Otay 10.18.'17 bass on frog from m seewald on Vimeo.

Got more blow ups than fish, as usual, and lost a real nice one on a hookset, monsters hardly budge when you hookset them as if they're only 2's, and note to self, RE-TIE, braid does not last forever after a couple of dozen frog fish fought!

Oct. 1 to the 16th, in France. Got a FRENCH bass! Yeah.

lear skies, slight winds.

Got a nice one that my friend Tom Cosgrove took for me from his boat, he'd done well too.

Had a blast at Otay, all topwater, mostly on Sammy's and kick leg frogs or hollow bodied frogs, couple on the med. W. Plopper, like this one on my new Dobyn's SB rod, third cast, way to break it in.

Got this buster on the W. Plopper, funny how sometimes they go for bigger baits.

Got this lunker on the frog, first of the day on my afternoon session.

And this shows the spot she was waiting to ambush my bait!

Here was another frog bass towards dusk.

And this shows the spot I had to hit, and bring her out of, which was not easy. There
is a ton of sunken brush they dig down in, being shallow most of the time, and then
dragging them over the fallen trees and brush. Small miracle to get them landed, you
have to reel fast, and strong braid and rods make it possible.

The kick leg frog, similar to a buzzbait, is working well this time of year too (a fluke worked across the surface would work the same).

Nice area to work, the ends of the arms.

6.32 PM, capturing the end of another blessed day.

Otay w/ David V.

Boat:  Answered Prayer 9:30 am till 4:30 pm
Me 9, David V. 5 (all top)

Arrived at lake to blue skies, zero wind, and noticed busters in middle of lake just from the docks, so we motored over and David tossed his Reaction Innovation Shark (kickleg frog), and while adjusting his reel after the first cast a bass ate it as it sunk, he was so excited, and that was cool.

Click photo to enlarge.
David with first cast bass, 9:45 a.m.

We worked them for over an hour, I got them on the Sammy mostly, but one on the Poe's Ace in the Hole prop bait, the 4" one.

Click photo to enlarge.
Got my limit on the topwater buster action over a one hour period or so.

After the wind came up it was more sporadic, and we finally made a run to the far back, my new honey hole, and I got one in short order on the Spro popper frog along shore under a batch of floating dead tulles.

Click photo to enlarge.
The trusted Spro popper frog gets her done.

Got blown up on with the new Reaction Innovation 'shark' lure and David followed it up minutes later at the same spot and got her to go, same lure!

Heard from Tom the week before there was a hidden area, so to speak, past the tulles at the end of Harvey's, so we ran back there to start with, and got the Skeeter on plane when we hit the 20 yards of floatind debris that plugged up the 'canal' that goes back. Push poled the rest of the way back, along with trolling motor on hight (now fixed from two weeks earlier of cable/fuse problems).

Really got into the frog bass.

Nada first hour working our way in, frogs and WP for me, flukes and frog and WP for Tom. He got the first finally on the WP, was to be his last. I started getting them on the Gavacho frog, green/white belly. Ended with 11 on the frog, nothing under 2, nothing over 4, mostly 3's. Fun times. At dust it got even better, of course. Back to docks about 7:45, 10 minutes after sunset.

Wed., Aug. 9th
Otay Lake Reservoir

Boat: Tom Cosgrove's alum.
4 me, one frog, one wplopper (new white, 3 cast Harvey’s, entrance on right.) 1 bass pro kick tail fluke, StikePro stick bait.
7 Tom C., one wplopper, 6 kastmaster dinks.

Nada first hour, we worked the second cove past the sculler docks again, nada. I ran the tm all day. Ran to entrance of Harvey's, right side, where I've been doing well. Got a nice 3 on the third cast of the new Powder (white), med. WP 130, cool. Kept up with the frog, and Tom was trying it more too, has never done well with it, maybe one or two so far. I got one on it, and also the fluke and the stickbait.

Kept working that whole side to the big cove, then ran back to Otay arm and fished the shadows, got into a nice topwater buster bite, finally. Tom slayed them on the kastmaster, I stuck w/ the frog, going for big one. Got one on the Gunfish right off though.

*Wed., Aug. 2nd
Otay Lake Reservoir

Boat: Answered Prayer (87 Skeeter w/ 115 Merc.)
Solo 2 bass on the kick tail Bass Pro Fluke
3 till 8

Was hot at Otay, In more ways than one! Fished from three till dusk, was so nice on the water with all the clouds. Got some great blowups on top- frogs. But nothing stuck at first.

Fished the first or second cove in Otay arm on left side past the sculler docks, and bottomed out in shallow but forced trolling motor to turn in the mud and busted the older cable (had replaced the longer one a few months back). Even the newer one was starting to break, so order a set from the Trolling Motor Doctor in O.C.. Also blew the fuse as running it with the prop not turning).

So went and fished the entrance to Harvey's, left side, and let the wind blow me down the shore, nada. Ran across to the south side. Only the fluke seemed to work, and after getting a few went back to frogs. Soft jerk baits had nonstop action by other boaters too, in 12 foot of water outside tulle points. But I stuck with bigger top water, swinging for the fences as usual. Even at dusk I lost three big ones on the StrikePro stick bait (sim. to a S.Sook) in five minutes, dang! I could've really scored but that's fishing. (NOTE: the following week noticed that the first bass had straightened out the hook, no wonder lost all three).

Otay Lake Reservoir

Boat: Answered Prayer (87 Skeeter w/ 115 Merc.)
Sunday, Valerie worked for me.
Probably 6 hours min.

Went out but as I did not record any bass w/ the camera (catching up on these posts a month later), only see photos of frog on pole and sunset. Oh, I remembered I had tried all new areas with the frog and struck out.

"Glad to see you getting back out there!"

Yeah, too much work, I've been going crazy, usually fish twice weekly, now lucky to get a 1/2 day every other week or so!!! OUCH/HELP ME LORD!!!

Reason being the mall my gallery is in has a new owner, and his management team now requires us to maintain 'regular mall hours', which is 10 to 9 daily, 'cept Sunday, close at 6! (Don't blame them really, if we all have irregular hours traffic suffers from folks not knowing if anything is even open, so many other shops were doing the same!).

Means no more 'gone fishing, back tomorrow' notes on the door. Will need to get more artists back in to share the space and go back to it being a 'co-op' in effect, like I did years ago. Then I'll get days off again. Was nice while it lasted. (Any retired folk needing part time work selling for big comm. only contact me).

Here's a couple of snaps of the plaza, with an ocean view (how blessed), and some promos in the gallery, and the gallery itself. Come on by and say hi when in Del Mar. It's on old Hwy 101, and 15th street, in 'old Del Mar'. My 'Best of Hawaii' is up on display, along with 100 images from 65 world-wide destinations. "

*Mon., July10th,
El Capitan Reservoir

Boat: Answered Prayer (87 Skeeter w/ 115 Merc.)
4 bass me, 0 bass Eric - one on Strike Pro 'waterstriker', three W.Plopper (one a 3).

Water down 8' since last trip, 80 degrees, maybe 84 back in trees.

Picked Eric up at frameshop at 10:30, on water by noon. Met 'Capt. Kirk' Mitchell at pay station, he recognized me from reports. He's retired. Says he fishes Obregon yearly (last time end of Feb., 2017, 125 fish per day, 25 on top- his buddy as a bass boat), said we should buddy boat down, he likes it more that Novillo! Also, has a 25' Parker center, said I'd trade art for a seat, as lately no cash for gas.  His buddy Terry (who has terminally ill wife, bummer) had the boat, would not start. Help them get it started. (They got 3 in three hours, buzzbait). He usually fishes with 'Marshall', who works so weekends only.

New acquaintance 'Cap't Kirk' getting top action..

Water down 8' since last trip. We worked the ramp cove, and I got a nice 2 pounder second cast while Eric parked the trailer, TUL. It broke my lure in 1/2 (probably due to so many monsters on it lately, as this bass was too small to do that!?). Zippo, I threw top, Eric spinner. Fished second point on right headed N. for nada, all the way to third long point, which is now a peninsula again.

First bass broke my well used med. Whopper Plopper- wow!

Ran to trees and started in the back right, wind was pretty strong. Nada. Worked inside of the trees, which were in some 8-9' depth. Looked great, nada. Worked other side when we could no longer go along shore, deeper, 10' still. back to front. Got a blow up on the med. WP, and Eric first, on a frog under the trees. He mixed it up, a metal flapping bird lure, the frog, and a white spinner, nada more for him. Worked the right side out more, after reaching the front, nada. Got to spot across from Boulder Bay so ran over there, and I got one of two blowups landed, a nice 2#, bass #2.

Third of four bass was a nice one, 3 lbs. on the med. W.P.

Ran to the island to work the point, got bass #3, a nice 3 pounder, and another on the next point where the dam arm starts, always get action these two points. TUL!

*Weds., July 5th,

Otay Lake with Mike Wade

Boat: Answered Prayer (87 Skeeter w/ 115 Merc.)
0 bass Mike, 7 bass me - two on frog, three W.Plopper (one a 4.5 and one a 6.5) and two on BPS small swimbait, gray back white belly.

Picked Mike up at this house at noon, then made the one hour drive to the lake and launched. Made a run to the sculling ramp for 20 minutes of frog nada. Ran to back of Harvey's, saw Rob and Trevor first and got info, they had 8 since 8, only one on frog), so looked bad. We fished from far back right end back to the creek for nada, nor did we see fish (found out later Rob got zippo there too, but it was good a month ago!)

Decided to make a flats run, and went back towards the entrance of Harvey's were I started throwing the med. W.P., and got a 6.5 in short order in 12' of water.

First bass was a nice one, 6.50 lbs.

Continued this while Mike threw a buzzbait, and at 4;30 I got a 4 pounder, just 10 minutes later. Worked into the opening of tulles and got another, this time a 2, just on outside tulle line, like the four was.

Second bass was almost as nice one, 4.50 lbs.

Worked around that area, tied on a BPS swimbait that I use as a trailer for the Chatterbait and got one in two casts, TUL. (Mike was getting bummed, nada for him yet). I offered him one but he declined. Got another, then decided to run to Bushlow Cove after running into Rob and Trev coming from the creek, to give them space.

I got one back on the frog, finally, back in Bushlow. We fished it all the way back to shallow water, and got a 'tree hanger' bass 1/2 way back in, cool. Worked it back out, nada. Was getting darker so ran to back of Otay arm and got another on the frog off a thin tulle patch. Then back to the skuller dock cove for more nada at dusk.
