*Otay June 29
Boat: Answered Prayer, Skeeter
From 1 till 8 p.m.

Sunny, breezy. Water 80.
Results: 2 bass.1 WP med., 1 new 1/2 oz Strike King Tandem White/chart buzzbait.

Worked med. W.Plopper right side grasses from point to back of Harvey’s arm. Got one. Got a 3 on full size tandem Strike King buzz bait in back right corner.
Lost a 6er on green/yellow belly Spro popper back of Otay. Lots of cool grass. Some guys killing em on small ploppers (worked like regular 'pro baits') over grasses back there. Would be good place to work popper fast too now.

Nice one on the 1/2oz buzzbait far back of Harvey's arm.

Lots of hits on S. Spook at dusk over grasses by first cove back there, no sticky (like I did w/ 4 on buzz bait week earlier).

*June 24th, El Capitan
Boat: Answered Prayer, Skeeter
1 p.m. till 8 p.m.
Results: 7 bass. Buzzbaits, Flukes and WP.

Sunny, breezy. Water 80.

Worked the ramp area for the first couple of hours, got one on a smaller, 1/4 oz Strike King Buzzbait on first cast by rockpile, after a few casts working there w/ Med. WP.

First cast with the buzzbait, fish on!

Got another on it after working the whole end, shallows and all, and getting back towards the shore.

Tied on a fluke and then got one off grasses in the corner. Went past buoy line and worked the first cove, and lost the buzzbait re-tying, ouch, None that smaller profile, so tied regular 1/2oz one on. Nada. Worked usual points and shore towards north, then entrance to Conejos w/ buzzer, nada. Ran back towards island, now a penn., and got one on WP point.

The fluke worked over grasses is a good pattern too.

Then to grasses around in shallow cove, and then around corner towards dam and got a nice one on the WP.

Last cast, and last but not least, the Plopper comes
thru, this one hit and fought like a train.

Prepped my new Daiwa Lexa 300 for this trip out.
($159 off eBay, reg. $200).

Started out straight across from dock, working frog and the 3:16 bass lure above, nada. Then went with the large Plopper, got one blow up on it. Worked it all the way to point, and then around it and down Harvey's, right side, with it. A little with TR Ika too, both nada. Wind was up pretty good, and downsized Plopper and started getting them. Got three in about 3 hours, two over the grasses, one down near end along deeper tulles, time? About 2 to 5 p.m. after heading back to the beginning spot of the grasses and working them all the way back again, for about an hour, for the second time- nada, but winds were down too.

One of three nice ones on the med. Whopper Plopper

Worked the far back, got one bass to go three times, on slop/frog, but no sticky! (See pic).

Far back of Harvey's arm. Bass spot under grasses is marked with X.

After an hour working the grasses, I worked the entire back, frog and Plopper, nada but one blowup on the frog, then back out a bit, then ran to point and and worked shaded tulles for nada with Plopper. Worked about point and into Otay arm with Plopper and double blade chartreuse/white buzzbait, nada, to first cove. Shot across cove to flats and sun had just set. Worked those flats and got four nice bass, all 2+ with the  last almost a four pounder.

Got this last one of 4, about 4 pounds, on the twin-blade buzzbait.

Fun stuff and way to end the day. Shot back and two boats still wiping down, I was last one off lake, about 8:10 p.m..

*Otay, Wed., June 8th
Boat: Answered Prayer, Skeeter
Overcast till 10, then on and off clouds Water 75
6 a.m. till 8 p.m.
Results: 1 bass, Lizard

Got this one just as clouds were disappearing. None more next hour on it.

Saw a video where two guys killed 'em on the frog on past Sat.. Started at buoy line near dam, right side. Tossed it from 6 a.m. till 10, along w/ Lg Plopper, for nada. (Ran into friend, and heard from another, same results on it). Saw one guy getting a lot on the brush hog, on outside grass line on right side of Harvey's, about a 1/3 of way in. I replicated it after awhile, to get stripe off boat, did so second cast w/ lizard, than nada for next hour (sun had just come out).

Worked the back of Harvey's, nada, then to back of Otay Arm, ran into Rob, Linebig on SDfish, he reported poor results. Tried frog from back toward south, a few hundred yards, for nada.

Took break around 3 to put one of two new Skeeter protective wheel well covers on and then took nap for 2 hours. Went back out about 5 and worked straight across.

*Lake Murray, Mon, June 6th
shore
5.30 a.m. till 9.30 a.m.
Results: 1 bass -suspending jerkbait

Worked the ramp area with WP and L. Punker, then to the right of it, and then back to first cove near entrance, then to dock, nada.

One on suspending jerkbait, fished 5.30 till 9.30, big baits both sides of ramp.

*Lake Murray, Fri., June 3rd
Boat: Answered Prayer, Skeeter
Overcast till 9, then sunny. Water 75
5.30 a.m. till 8 p.m.
Results: Mike C., 0, me 6 bass, all dinks on suspending jerkbaits, 1 4# on gunfish at dusk.

Got to lake at 6 (found out it opened at 5:30) with it fairly foggy, great. Mike was late, so worked docks till he got there, about 7. Got a nice blow up and hook up on the 7" wood Lunker Punker but heavy grasses (found out later) let her get off when she dug down. Got a 5 a few minutes later, up to shore but she got off at feet. Mike showed and we shot across to point, fished top and he d/s, cranks, etc., nada. Went towards dam and worked d/s, top, nada. Back to point and Mike left at 1, both of us skunked at that point.

Nice foggy morning, Lake Murray. The spot shown on right got me two hits.

I took 2 hr nap and back at it at 3.30 and worked grasses with suspending jerkbait, white, into the long cove, right side of dock, and started getting into them. Worked it all the way to back and ended up with 5 or 6. Worked around point and back down the long cove, nada.

Went across to other side, not reaching end two guys were there, and got a nice 4# on the Gunfish near shore about 1/2 way back out.

This four pounder hit the Gunfish at dusk.

That was it, fished it to place across from the docks at dusk, around 8 p.m..

Headed towards sunset, so pretty at that time.

Noon till 7.30. Sunny but cold, was supposed to rain. Started w/topwater at second point heading north, then worked around to big third one. Got two (one got off) on a new Gunfish at corner rock pile N. of Conejos arm an hour later. Then worked the frog over grasses in cove just past point, one blow up. Vince pulled up, said just got there.

Finally realized wind waves needed more sound, thus Super Spook choice, and results.

Worked the opposite shore to 'turn point', then ran to cove behind island to work frog, shallow and not much grass. Worked around to points on island, got one on . The Spook got two.

*MHS, May 17th

The large pond, so pretty.

Got permission to fish the ponds again, Left a job to get printed at Metalography, will take two hours. Got a call, did not turn out, needs two more hours- cool, get more time to fish. Daytime hours tough. A bit hot, not too bad. Got some on Gunfish after a couple of hours.

Got a nice hit at Conejos flats on the Plopper.  Saw Vince over by the island, he’d got one. Got two more on the Plopper working towards dam. Cool. Also, lost a big one a buzzbait.

Got great topwater action, all on the Gunfish.

Got permission to fish the ponds. Just checked out Metalography for getting enlargements made in Temecula and thought why not, had not fished them in some time. Had a blast, and weather was great.

*Barrett Lake, opening day, May 4th
Sunny. air 75 in late afternoon
tube till 9, then boat till dark/ 5 a.m.till 7pm
Results: 7 bass and 1 crappie

Mike C.- 3, Herbert 0. Me 7

Josh S. sold me two tube tics, $25 each. I sold one to Allen N. of Esc., as Paul O. said he wanted to join, but later found out it was a Wed. opening day.

Got Mike C. and Herbert two tics too from another boater.

I arrived at 4.30, everyone gone in already. Started fishing a little after 5, in the dark. Tried all the baits that worked in last years opener. After two hours nada. Gunfish, blades, jerkbaits. Dockhand Dave, at 9 am, reported 6, said he got 30 last year in same time frame.

At 8.30 Mike and Herbert rolled in. Mike paid Jose $20 and took a spare boat that he and Herbert took. They said three was a crowd, so I did the same, but for $12, as it’s all I had.

Finally got a Gunfish fish at 9 a, from the boat by the point near the dam. Did not get another till 3, when I finally broke down and went slow d/s. Got two in one hour. Two buddies left by 3, they had 5 between them.

Opening day was tough. Bass on left was first for day.
Nice crappie on spinnerbait in afternoon.

Dusk was good for blades and under spins. No top what so ever, kept the faith but did not help. Ended with 7 for the day. Plus that 2 lb crappie on a blade. LAURIE tried to cheer me up. Said I was not the lowest numbers, two guys got skunked. Lake was beautiful, loved the submerged brush, I think it will help as water warms up. Water was 64. Last year 65. Some shad eggs on my fins, nothing like last year. Good to see the staff. Can't wait to get back out.

*Lake Champagne, April 20th
sunny. air 85 in late afternoon
shore 5pm till 7pm
Results: 1

Got out with Herbert and Mike C. after cooking a steak bbq for Mike and Rocio, Valerie and I, and the Kellners. Was great. Got one bass, on the 3" Gunfish, clear, working over some moss. Mike lost a big one, broke off lifting it out, so I won our mini-tourney, largest and most with my 6" bass!

*Lake Hodges, April 27th
Water/weather: 68 at dam, 76 in back, sunny/windy.
Boat: Answered Prayer / 3p.m. till 7:45

First time fishing the Champagne RV park ponds.
This is #3, the highest and largest.

Visited my buddies Herbert and Gitta, who invited me to fish the pond they are living on, at the Champagne Lakes RV park in Escondido (near Temecula). It's got three ponds, each with RV's around them, with the largest at the end, in the highest part of the park, which runs uphill as you go further in. Herbert said he'd fished it hard with d/s, and other lures, but the only thing he, and all the other fisherman, ever got them on was, wait for it, HOTDOGS!

I had seen some 4 and 5 pounders just under the mosses, but they would not touch the Senkos nor the frog. Herbert reported a 4 or 5 for him, on hotdogs, and some guy getting an 8, in the corner by the 'dam'. Also hotdog? Think he said so.

Refused to succumb to the 'hotdog only' bait to get them.
Two hours into it I got one on the Gunfish, and another clone five minute later.

I started to believe him, I tried frogs over the floating mosses, Senkos, even fished a bed fish. The place is very beautiful, and CJ, the owner, let them stay on his personal spot on the lake itself. Toward dusk I refused to switch to hotdogs, which Gitta had just shown up with as Herbert had run out, and cheese did not do the trick. I put on the trusted 3.5" white Gunfish and had a fish on within two casts... cool, the first guy in the history of this place to get one on artificial!? ;/)

A little further down I got another, about 1.8 lbs, and a third hit later, and a 5 or larger catfish too, but it got off before landing it.

*Lake Hodges, April 13th
Water/weather: 72, sunny.
Boat: Answered Prayer / 3p.m. till 7:45
Results: 0 bass

Got out about 3 p.m., ran across to area straight across from the ramp, where I've done well over the years, nice drop off. Worked the W.Plopper and S.Spook, nada. After an hour the hit most of the long stretch went and picked up friend Matt w/ his 3 & 5 year olds. Nice boys, they were excited, never been fishing.

We ran to the back where I'd done so well last week, but between my top Spooks and Ploppers, and the white chatter at the cut where I'd lost the six the week before, nada. Went across and worked from the buoys east, top, nada.

Boys kept busy studying my boxes of lures, and the boat ropes tying knots, etc.. By 6 took turns with helping them fish bobber/worms, nada. By 7 Matt was cold (came in shorts w/ tShirt), and lack of sun this time of year has it go cold quick. Took them back to docks, ran back and tried top till 7.45, nada. After the week before was surprised. Oh well.

*Lake Hodges, April 6th
Water/weather: 68 to 76 (closer to dam, cooler it got), cloudy, sprinkling.
Boat: Answered Prayer /3p.m. till 7:45
Results: 2 bass, both on topwater S. Spook (3's), lost a 6 on white chatterw/ fluke paddle tail TUL.

Got out about 3 p.m. and started to work from the docks in the corner, W.Plopper. Worked the flats all the way to the trees in the N.E. corner, almost. Waves/wind up a bit. Nada. Ran towards the back, just past the water intakes/buoy area and worked towards the dam. Saw on guy get on on plastics off a point, kept working top. Got a nice 3.5 finally, on a S. Spook, bone color, off a rock in fairly shallow water. Worked to the end, then back towards the east.

First bass at Hodges in some time, and she
was a nice one. 3.5 lbs, on topwater S.Spook

On one culvert tossed the white chatter w/ a kick tail white zoom fluke 5' and a sixer inhaled it and ran boat ward, making me think nothing was there. Finally felt it after realizing what was up and reeling in fast, made contact and starting fighting her. As she came to jump realized I'd never really got a hookset and sure enough, head shake and bye-bye.

Worked it east some more than ran across and started to work the deep drop off side. In no time I got topwater love, and after a couple of hits landed a 2.8. Continued to get a lot of hits, but they would just not stick, like 8 or 10 over a few hundred yard area. Amazing how many were there, this lake is far from dead. Fished till almost 8, as it was overcast could not tell how long the sun had actually been down, but was not the last one off- almost.

*El Capitan, March 28th
Water/weather: 67 to 69, cloudy, very windy and threatening to rain..
Boat: Answered Prayer
Results: 4 bass, all on topwater (three 2's and a 3), the large Whopper Plopper. TUL.

Got out about 1 p.m., ran across Tom the float tuber, who also has a bass tracker that I met at Otay, and he had got 5, all on shiners. He reported them in 5 to 10, just outside weed lines. He gave me a large bottle of water, cool, as I'd not any for the whole day.

I worked the flats by the ramp, the water now lower than ever I've seen it, nada on the larger Plopper. Ran the points on the right to the far third one, and got my first Plopper fish of the year (and only 2nd top, the first being on the Punker at the Delta two weeks ago).

First Large Whopper Plopper bass of the year. Felt great. He hit it right off the point, in very choppy, windy one at that.

The second one came on the flats at the island, on the second attempt.

Then ran across to the island, now a peninsula, and got another on the flats, cool. He missed it the first time, I tossed it elsewhere after sharpening the hooks, and threw on him again and he went again, this time getting hooked.

Worked all the way towards the dam, nada.

The second one came on the flats at the island, on the second attempt.

Ran to the ramp towards dusk, and got a nice three close to it, then got a two by the rocks which now show by the shallow end. Called it a day at 6.30, getting darker and still threatening to rain, but only sprinkling.

The third was the best one, going about three pounds,
and hit near the shallows, just off some rocks, close to the ramp.

*California Delta, March 21st to 24th
Water/weather: 58-62, rainey first day, then sunny w/ slight breezes next three days.
Boat: Answered Prayer/ Ramp- All Tower Park Marina ($7 fee to launch per day)
Results: 4 bass day 1, 11 bass day 2, 5 bass day 3 and 3 bass day 4! TUL.

Monday, March 21st
Finished giving the private 3 day photo class in Carmel Calif. and headed to the Calif. Delta for some R&R. Stopped along the way many times to shoot the wonderful oak trees, so got here later than planned. Launched in the rain around 5 pm, and was on them by 5:30.

Worked the usual spots, the park bay, then ran to Sycamore where the blade and chatterbait baits have been working. They did not disappoint. Since I got them on the blade last time, I decided to try the Z-Man Chatterbait more, the white one.

Got onto them right off the bat. Chatterbait this time was the ticket. How can you beat catching 6's, 7's and 4's like it was easy money! TUL!

Day 2, March 22nd
Today did ok for a high pressure, day after the storm day. Ended with 11, with a 7, two 5's, some 4's, and the rest twos. Even got a striper.

For a high cloud, high pressure day following the storm the day before, my buddy Mike said I'd have a hard time of it. The bass did not get the note, TUL.

Day 3, March 23rd.
Joined my buddy Mike M. on his boat, at 11 a.m.. He'd gone out around 8 a.m. on high tide and got three, none of size. We ran to the state park bay, for nada. Then ran back to Sycamore and he put on a clinic for me. Of course he was on the front of the boat, so the bass had a chance at his baits (blades mostly, some Chatters) first. I got five, whereas he got about 12 or so. His biggest went 8.25, with some 5's.

My bigest only went four, but Mike's went 8.25.

Day 4, March 24th.
So I finish my day, started fairly early to get the high tide bite, and got two 5's and a 4, and as I started to leave (from back in Sycamore slough), my big motor on my '87 Skeeter starts to act up. Ran fine three days straight, and my runs are about three to four miles to get here. Right when I needed to head back for my eight hour drive home it just made a noise that I'm not used to, like a high pitch warning the oil is out, plus a grind sound. I checked the oil, it was low and added some, then prayed (boat's called The Answered Prayer). Would that solve the problem? It did not. Same sound, no startie! I started to think positive, I thought- 'oh no, it's blown for sure'. Well, that was not positive, but I did think it.

Ok, so I only got three fish today. But hey, two were 5's and one was a 4! TUL.

Then I remembered I'd filled the live well earlier (I never use it usually) as I was going to keep some of my lunkers for one of those 'here's a few big ones' shots that I've never done. But two days earlier I'd used that pump/well to keep an 8+ alive until I could find someone with a scale to weigh it. That must have drained the battery, it's a 7 year old Optima, as the thing would not turn over, but did when I jumped it to my depth finder battery. But this was making a weird sound, which threw me. But I again jumped it to my depth finder battery and she started right up and purred, as usual. Cool, it WAS just the battery, better buy a new one, but emergency over, right?

Then got up on plane, and ran 1/2 a mile when she stops dead in the water. Now what. More prayer, pumped the gas but it does not get hard! Uh oh, maybe bulb bad and gas cant' get through? Can't be gas right, as I'd put some (two gallons for insurance, it already had 10) in day before, and could not use that much on only two trips. But she starts. But died twice more, pumped the bulb, and started, then just made it back - but just.(Was starting to think on of those VERY Long TM trips back).

Then I wondered, what if? When I got back to S.D. I hit the gas station, and sure enough, it had been just about out of gas. Guess the gas was used up faster than I'd thought, so bulb was not bad, it can't pump gas that's not there! I'm such an idiot. Of course, in my defense, oh yeah, I don't have one! ;/)

*California Delta, Feb 29th- March 3rd
Water/weather: 58-62, sunny w/ slight breezes, to very windy, to overcast.
Boat: Answered Prayer/ Ramp- All Tower Park Marina ($7 fee to launch per day)
Results: 1 bass day 1, one bass day 2, 0 bass day 3 and 15 bass day 4! TUL.

Monday Feb. 29th
Got there the first day, Monday Feb. 29th, after leaving from Yosemite (El Portal) and shooting the Merced river while driving to the Delta, taking about three hours to drive a one hour drive to Mariposa. Got tot the Delta and launched by about 3, and fished to the right side of Tower Park, at 'Park cove'. Got a nice 4+ on the Lunker Punker at sunset.

Got my first topwater of the year, at least on the mainland USA
(Got a dink on a buzzbait in Kauai a week earlier).

The clouds, and wonderful light, kept me busy with my iPhone. TUL

March 1st / Day two
Launched at around noon and fished till 6.30, towards Tower Park for the most part, and then to the slough. Worked the blade and had two hits and fought another two, none landed.

The clouds and wonderful weather greeted me on day two.

At around 4:30 ran to three island and worked it w/ topwater, and eventually a Senko and got one.

March 2nd / Day three
Launched at 10 and found out buddy Mike Meyers was out on 'my water'. Ran to Park Cove first and worked it, inside and out, nada. Ran to the slough and found Mike about half way in and he had about 8 or so. I worked the islands with the blade, starting from the first, and the chatterbait and a large top, all for naught.

Day three, and another fine day is captured as
I motored towards the best fishing waters I know.

Mike got over 10 this day, and this was his largest, over 7.

Mike came back towards dusk with a 7+ and some threes. Took his pick, continued big baits as wind way up, nada. We hit park cove at dusk, then called it a day together.

March 3rd / Day four
The area was supposed to have a big storm, but it was only cloudy out so I went back out. Launched at 10 a.m., then worked Park Cove, nada, then ran to the slough. I'd lost a Plano tackle box filled w/ jigs and new chatterbaits off the deck the night before, and scouted out the area first- no luck.

Was nice to finally get a spinnerbait fish, since I'd thrown it for three or four hours over the past couple of days without landing any of the ones that I'd fought on it.

The second bass of the day was the largest of the day, and she was a beast.

Ran to the far end of the islands as three other boats were in the beginning, and that was good. My first was about a 4, then I got an 8.8. My scale was dead so I motored over to another fishermen and he loaned me his. Nice. Fished all the way to the beginning by the end of the day, took that long. All came on the Chart/White Terminator spinnerbait with a small zoom kick tail fluke. Did buy a white chatterbait from one guy (lost my only one first cast under the bridge, had said I was sure I did not need to stop at Walmart for that backup, just in case- right!), but hardly used it as the blade was so hot.

The tenth bass of the day, this was really becoming one for the record books.

I did become one with that lure, whereas the day earlier it I felt so foreign to me- as I had not caught one on it for a year or so. I worked it with a lot of jerks and pauses after awhile, and it drew more bites because of it.

February/ Gone to Hawaii for three weeks to make art.

Did fish for bass and peacock bass on Kauai for about 3 to 4 hours. Got one dink on a buzzbait, and lost a one pounder at the shore.

*El Cap, Jan. 28th
w/Paul O. - me 0/Paul 2
Time: 8.30 a.m. till 4 pm
Water/weather: 53.5-55, sunny w/ slight breezes.
Boat: Answered Prayer
Results: 2 bass on d/s for Paul

Picked Paul up at 7-11 at 8 a.m. and we were on the water a 1/2 hour later. Worked first point from ramp on right, then flats just past that, then second point, with my new 6" Hudd., Paul d/s and dd cranks. Worked right side of island, rip rap, with d/s, as did Paul, nada, working all the way down to 'dead mans point'. Many boats along same stretch.

Results: 3# bass on Speedtrap flat bill craw at dusk

Saw Jim (JJ Fish boards) on way out, he was skunked, working shallows and deep all morning. Been slow. I started at rock piles just inside  Harvey's arm. One other gentleman was there, had caught 6 the week before, jerk baits near tulles to 2 lbs. So far, nada. mostly d/s Marg. Mut. for an hour or so, and some 8" W. Plopper too, nada. Moved to entrance and fished 6" hudd, ROF 5, nada. Metered fish at 30', which was my target depth from Kellen's advice on SDfish.

Fish on the bottom.

Worked around and down Otay arm a few hundred yards, then back to point, nada. Had added a small 1/2oz slip weight on line to get it down deeper, and to stay down. (Just ordered a 3 ROF 12's).

As sun got lower looked for S.W. facing rock, and headed towards Bushlowe cove and 1/2 way there some some. Threw the craw flat bill Speedtrap and a 3# nailed it as it went over the rocks. Fought great.

Got the stripe off the back the last hour.

As sun got lower I decided to use more of Kellen's advice and target rock, which holds heat for the bass, attracting them as the water is so cold. I got one in the first few casts, and she fought like a 6, but was only a three. Worked Bushlowe cove for the last 1/2 hour, more Speedtrap on rock and tulle edges.
